Spamhaus the U.K.-based spam-fighting organisation has been blocking so-called "transactional" email messages, or a message a retailer sends after asking a consumer if they want to receive a purchase receipt by email. The practice allows retailers to grow their email marketing databases. So says networkworld .com.

The problem is that the email address is often incorrectly typed in. So in the future when the retailer sends messages to the address it will look like spam as it is continually bouncing.

Spamhaus publishes data that is used by ESPs to block IP addresses that have been known to deliver malware or spam. According to one industry insider, Spamhaus blocked some email from major retailers such as the Gap and Gilt because the emails kept bouncing.

Because of this Spamhaus is warning marketers to keep their databases cleansed of bad email addresses lest their messages be mistaken for spam and blocked.

The one way of insuring you are not blacklisted by Spamhaus is to check addresses in real time as they are input and also use the most detailed levels of validation.

Most traditional methods of email validation only checks that it looks like an email address, i.e. has an @ in the middle with some valid characters on either side. The data8 email validation services goes much further:
