EU Online Data Privacy Directive

Are you ready for the new directive which comes into force May 25th?

After that date marketers must ask permission from web users before placing cookies on their browser to collect data for targeting purposes.

The department responsible for the implementation is the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), their reading of the situation is to allow marketers an ‘opt-out’ approach. In essence this means you will have to provide a clearly visible button where visitors to your site can click and reject any cookies. This is not as draconian as the ‘opt-in’ option where the button would be used to accept cookies.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will have ultimate responsibility for enforcement, they will be unlikely to enforce the directive for the first few months as people adapt to the directive. So you may have a months grace.

As you are looking at your site to implement this directive, why not consider also adding applications that will improve your customer’s experience such as Postcode Lookup, or our other data validation tools.
