Royal Mail launches smartphone gateway link

Royal Mail has launched a new digital watermarking technology, the watermark allows businesses to direct their customers through to online content from mailing and door to door campaigns. Recipients are taken to specific website, video or social networking pages.

In order to view the digital content, customers must use their 3G smartphones to scan the watermark. The scanner will come in the form of an app, called Digital Space, which will be available shortly from the Apple and Android App stores. Once the App has been downloaded, customers will be able to hold their smartphone over the watermark and then be taken directly through to the specific content.

Royal Mail said they were the first postal company in the world to implement such a solution. Their hope is that it will bring more customers back to using the printed media with an easy link to digital media.

No price has been announced yet but if you decide to use the watermark ensure you have some data cleansing done, it would be a shame to pay a premium for a mailing only to send it to goneaways and deceased. A FREE data quality will let you know how much you can save.
