QR is short for Quick Response, they are a pattern of designs that can be scanned by a smart phone and the information retained by the phone. They originated in Japan where they are very common, they are used to take a piece of information from a web page or a printed page and put it in to your smart phone.
We have put them on the back of our business cards so anyone can scan each individual card and retain the details, in our case it allows you to see a picture and a biog of the owner of the card. Below are our codes.

To read the code you need a QR code reader or bar code scanner on your phone, they can be easily downloaded from an app store, simply switch it on and hover the phone over the image and it will generate a link to the appropriate part of the website.
The reason why they are more useful than a standard barcode is that they can store (and digitally present) much more data, including url links, geo coordinates, and text.
You can easily generate your own codes using a site such as qrstuff.com and your printer can apply them where you need them. Like any data cleansing, always double check your codes to ensure they lead the person scanning to the correct web page.
