Sustainable Mail
is Royal Mail's new standard in responsible mailing. It allows your direct marketing
activities to be more environmentally-friendly and sustainable in the future.
Together with ISBA, Acxiom and the DMA, Royal Mail has been working with BSI British
Standards to develop a new environmental standard for direct marketing called PAS2020, which was launched in January
2009. Sustainable Mail covers many aspects of the PAS2020 standard including targetting,
suppression, printing, mailing, recyclability and unsubscribe.
Mailsort Savings
There are two levels in the Sustainable Mail specification: entry level and intermediate
level. If you achieve intermediate level then you are entitled to a further 4.7%
discount on your Mailsort savings.
Example Savings - a 50,000 mailing of Letter items sent using Mailsort
3, 120 will cost £8399.50. Sustainable Mail at intermediate level will entitle you
to a further saving of £394.78.
A mailing of 100,000 holiday brochures (200g) sent Mailsort 2, 1400 will cost over £33,000 but you can
save £1584.63 by using Sustainable Mail.
On top of this, you no longer need to buy an MPS licence or PAF cleansing software as this
is all included in your annual licence fee.
Sustainable Mail Specification
Sustainable Data from Data8 will help you achieve all of the data aspects of the
Sustainable Mail standard. We will also produce a certificate for each job performed

The Entry Level criteria from Sustainable Mail that Sustainable Data can solve are:
- Inserts Seed Data
- MPS Cleansing (including MPS Deceased)
- Suppresses against internal stop file
- Ensure 90% of addresses are PAF correct
The Inetermediate Level criteria from Sustainable Mail that Sustainable Data can solve are:
- Ensure 90% of addresses are PAF correct
- Removes Gone Aways
- Removes Deceased
- Allows you to create easy unsubscribe
- Allows for efficient returns handling
- Generates Certificate of Compliance
