Telecommunications Data Services
The UK telecommunications industry generates around £40bn in service revenues each year, the industry has experienced some declines, in particular within fixed voice communications. This has been due to the rise of consumers increasingly using mobile telephones and other forms of communication such as email. VoIP and instant messaging as substitutes for landline calls. There has however been an increase in the demand for more mobile data as a result.
Hardware used within this industry has seen phenomenal growth, this is thanks to the demand of mobile/smart phone and tablet technology. "Tablet penetration more than doubled in 2013, from 16% in 2012 to 36%. The highest growth is driven by the 35-44 age group where the ownership of tablets has increased by 165%.”1
Our definition of sector within telecommunications industry is that it is comprised of telephone landline operators, mobile telephone operators, broadband providers and cable operators.
